Babbel is worth it for an adult beginner who wants a structured course with the grammar explained and will use it for a year, at €8.99 a month on the 12-month plan (€107.88 a year, checked 9 October 2026 from Germany); it is not worth it if your goal is understanding native speakers at real speed, because its dialogues are scripted for learners.

What you get for the money
A course from A1 towards C1 on the one we checked, built from short lessons around real situations: ordering, introducing yourself, talking about plans. Grammar is explained in context, in English, so you understand why a sentence works. Speech recognition lets you repeat phrases, and review sessions bring back words you are forgetting.
Compared with Duolingo, Babbel explains more and wastes less time on odd sentences; compared with Busuu, it is a little more polished and a little more expensive. Our Babbel hub has the full entry, and Babbel for French looks at one course in detail.
Where it falls short
Real listening. Babbel's audio is clean, slow and scripted. Native speakers talk faster and drop sounds, and an ear trained only on Babbel struggles with that. In the 500 most recent App Store reviews we read, 24 complained about the lack of real speaking or listening.
Challenge. 30 reviews said the course felt too easy, repetitive or not like real progress, mostly from learners past A2.
Billing. 57 of 203 one- and two-star reviews were about price, subscriptions or cancelling, the single biggest complaint.
What it costs
Babbel was €8.99 a month on the 12-month plan, €107.88 a year, checked 9 October 2026 on babbel.com/prices from Germany. Paying month by month came to €215.88 a year, double the yearly plan, and a lifetime plan was €299.99.
Only the first lesson is free, so use it near-daily for a few weeks on a short plan before committing to a year. What Babbel costs sets out every plan.
Which should you choose?
If you are an adult beginner who wants rules explained and will study most days, Babbel's 12-month plan is good value. Babbel vs Duolingo covers the free alternative.
If you want a similar course for less, Busuu Premium was €57.99 a year on the offer we saw (checked 9 October 2026 from Germany) and it has a free tier. Babbel vs Busuu puts them side by side.
If you prefer learning by immersion with little English, Rosetta Stone does that, at €159 a year when we checked on 9 October 2026 from Germany, though it explains less.
If you have already finished one course app and still cannot follow native speakers, skip Babbel. Spend the money on real-speed listening and a tutor instead.

Questions
Can Babbel make you fluent?
No app can on its own. Babbel gives you a solid base to about B1; fluency needs real-speed listening and conversation with people.
Is Babbel better than Duolingo?
As a course, yes: it explains grammar and takes you further. Duolingo is free and better at building a daily habit.
How long should I use Babbel before judging it?
A month of near-daily lessons. If you are not using it after that, do not buy the yearly plan.
