Method
Babbel builds short lessons around real situations, explains the grammar in context in English and adds speaking practice. Duolingo teaches in bite-sized, game-style lessons that cover reading, writing, listening and speaking, with a streak to bring you back each day. Speak teaches useful phrases with a native-speaking teacher, has you repeat them out loud until they come without thinking, then puts you in a back-and-forth conversation with an AI tutor that gives feedback on pronunciation and phrasing.
How far each takes you
Babbel's curriculum runs from A1 towards C1 and is strongest from A1 to B1. Speak says it suits beginners to advanced learners; A1 to C1 is our reading. Duolingo's realistic range is A1 to B1.
Which should you choose?
If you want to start today for nothing, use Duolingo. It covers reading, writing, listening and speaking in small daily doses.
If you like knowing the rule behind a sentence, choose Babbel. It explains grammar in context and gives you a clear path to follow.
If you freeze when you have to speak, choose Speak. It gives you far more low-pressure out-loud practice than the other two.
If you want two, Duolingo for the habit and Speak for speaking fit together well. Babbel plus Speak is two subscriptions, so use both trials first.
What none of them does
Babbel's dialogues are scripted, Duolingo's sentences are recorded for learners and Speak's conversations are with an AI. None gives you native speakers at full speed or a real person to talk to. Add real listening early and a tutor once you have the basics. The two-way pages go deeper: Babbel vs Duolingo, Babbel vs Speak and Duolingo vs Speak. Who it's for
Babbel: adults who want a structured course with grammar. Duolingo: anyone who wants a free daily habit. Speak: learners whose main goal is to speak out loud without fear.
Who it's not for
Anyone who expects an app to replace real conversation, and learners past B1 who need real-speed listening more than another lesson or another AI chat.
