Busuu: many features free; Premium €57.99 a year (€4.83 a month, standard €116.28), checked 9 October 2026 from Germany.

Method
Babbel builds short lessons around real situations, explains the grammar in context in English and adds speaking practice. Busuu runs a CEFR-labelled course level by level, with AI review tools and exercises you can submit for feedback. Duolingo teaches in bite-sized, game-style lessons that cover reading, writing, listening and speaking, with a streak to bring you back each day.
How far each takes you
Babbel's curriculum runs from A1 towards C1. Busuu goes up to B2. Duolingo's realistic range is A1 to B1, and most people who finish it still cannot follow two native speakers talking. In practice Babbel and Busuu are both strongest from A1 to B1.
Which should you choose?
If you are not sure you will stick with a language, start on Duolingo. It is free, painless and builds a routine before you pay for anything.
If you want a full course on a budget and like seeing exactly which level you are at, choose Busuu. Its free tier is usable and Premium is the cheapest paid plan here.
If you want grammar explained in context and a course that keeps going past B2, choose Babbel.
If you want two apps, use Busuu or Babbel as the course and Duolingo for a free five minutes on busy days. Do not pay for both Babbel and Busuu: they cover the same levels.
What none of them does
All three use clean, scripted audio recorded for learners, and none puts you in an unprepared conversation with a person. Add real-speed listening from the first months and, from A2, a weekly tutor or language exchange. The two-way pages go deeper: Babbel vs Busuu, Babbel vs Duolingo and Busuu vs Duolingo. For one language in detail, see Babbel for French, Busuu for French and Duolingo for French.
Who it's for
Busuu: budget learners who like a CEFR-labelled path. Babbel: adults who want grammar explained and a course that runs furthest. Duolingo: anyone who wants a free habit first.
Who it's not for
Learners past B1 who need real listening and conversation more than another course app, and anyone hoping a course app alone will get them following native speakers at normal speed.

Questions
Which is best: Babbel, Busuu or Duolingo?
Busuu for value, Babbel for the longest course with grammar explained, Duolingo for a free start. All three suit adult beginners.
Which is cheapest?
Duolingo, which is free. Of the paid plans, Busuu Premium (€57.99 a year) cost less than Babbel's 12-month plan (€107.88 a year), both checked 9 October 2026 from Germany.
Should I pay for both Babbel and Busuu?
There is little reason to. Both are full course apps covering the same levels, so using both mostly repeats A1 to B1 twice. Pick one and spend the rest of your time on listening and speaking.
