Method

Babbel builds short lessons around real situations, explains the grammar in context in English and adds speaking practice. Duolingo teaches in bite-sized, game-style lessons that cover reading, writing, listening and speaking, with a streak to bring you back each day. Mondly, from Pearson, gives you short daily lessons built around useful phrases and mini conversations, with speech recognition and a chatbot to practise answering.

How far each takes you

Babbel's curriculum runs from A1 towards C1. Duolingo and Mondly realistically cover A1 to B1, and Mondly is thin past A2. Plan your next step, such as a fuller course or a tutor, before you finish either.

Which should you choose?

If you want to start for nothing, choose Duolingo and use it free for a month before paying for anything.

If you want to say simple things sooner and like a chatbot to answer, choose Mondly.

If you want to understand how the language works and keep going past the basics, choose Babbel.

If you are tempted to pay for two, do not: Mondly and Duolingo overlap heavily, and a second course app beside Babbel mostly repeats A1 and A2.

What none of them does

Babbel's dialogues are scripted and recorded for learners, Mondly's audio is recorded slowly for learners, and Duolingo's sentences are short. None of them plays native speakers at real speed or gives you a person to talk to. Add real listening early and a tutor or exchange partner once you have the basics.
