What you get

FluentU teaches with real video, from film scenes and TV clips to music videos, each with clickable subtitles, a video dictionary and quizzes on the words you meet, plus spaced-repetition flashcards. A Chrome extension adds the same subtitles to Netflix and YouTube. Both plans cover all its languages and work on the web, iPhone, iPad and Android. The difference between Plus and Super is the AI tutor: Plus has limited daily AI messages, Super much higher limits (fluentu.com/pricing, 9 October 2026).

When it does not pay off

Monthly billing is expensive for what it is. Short clips are not the same as following a whole conversation, and the words are chosen for you rather than by what you watch. Reviewers say the same about money: in 795 Google Play reviews we read, 347 were one or two stars and 153 were about price, subscriptions or cancelling, often a trial that became a yearly charge. Note the trial's end date the day you start it.

Which should you choose?

If you can read the language but struggle to follow it spoken, and you like short clips with a quiz, FluentU Plus on the yearly promotion works out at about $12 a month.

If you would rather watch whole episodes, Lingopie was €77.94 a year on the offer we saw (standard €155.88, checked 9 October 2026), cheaper than FluentU's yearly plans.

If you want podcasts and articles as well as video, LingQ Premium was $119.99 a year on the US App Store, checked 9 October 2026.

If you are a beginner or on a tight budget, start with a course such as Busuu and free YouTube channels; Easy French is one example of free street interviews with subtitles.

Who it's for

Learners at about B1 who like video, want real speech with support, and will pay yearly and use it most weeks.

Who it's not for

Complete beginners, learners on a tight budget, and anyone who would pay monthly. For them, a course app and free video on YouTube come first.
