What does your Duolingo score mean?
Your Duolingo score is Duolingo's own measure of how far you are through the course, out of 160, and Duolingo maps it to the CEFR levels A1 to C2. Pick your course, then type your score (or, for French, your section and unit) to see the level and what it means for real listening.

What the Duolingo score measures
Duolingo introduced the score in October 2024 for its CEFR-aligned courses, French among them. It goes up as you complete lessons and move through the units, so it is a measure of course progress: what the course has taught you so far, mapped onto the CEFR scale that schools and exams use. It is not a test result, and it says nothing about how much of the course you remember.
In April 2026 Duolingo said its French course now teaches through B2, which is Duolingo Score 100 to 129. Before that, most learners could only get to A2, a score of 59.

Reading level and listening level
Duolingo's level is a fair picture of what you can read and build from word tiles. Listening is usually behind it, because real French is fast, links words together and drops sounds, and lessons use short sentences recorded clearly. If your score says B1, expect natural-speed French to feel more like A2 to early B1 until you have spent real hours listening. The way to close the gap is plenty of spoken French at natural speed, with a transcript or a slower version when you need it.
Questions
What is a good Duolingo score?
It depends on what you need. On Duolingo's own scale, 30 to 59 is A2 (basic conversations on familiar topics), 60 to 79 is early B1 (enough for most travel situations) and 100 or more is B2. The French course currently ends around 129, so a score above 100 means you are in its last two sections.
What CEFR level is each Duolingo French section?
Duolingo labels Section 1 Intro, Sections 2 and 3 A1, Section 4 A2, Sections 5 and 6 B1, and Sections 7 and 8 B2. Sections 5 to 8 are built from short mini-units, which is why they hold most of the course's 964 units (Duolingo Data snapshot, December 2025).
Does finishing the French course make me B2?
On Duolingo's own scale, yes: the end of the course is high B2 (115 to 129). The course trains reading, word tiles and short, clear audio more than unscripted conversation, so many people who finish read like a B2 but listen and speak more like a B1. An exam such as the DELF B2 tests all four skills, with recordings at natural speed.
Why is my listening lower than my Duolingo level?
Duolingo lessons are mostly reading, tapping and short sentences recorded clearly, which you can replay. Real conversations are fast, run words together, drop sounds and do not wait for you. That is a separate skill, built with hours of real audio, so most learners find French at natural speed sits about one band below their Duolingo label. It is a gap to plan for, not a flaw in the app.
How long does the Duolingo French course take?
Duolingo does not publish it. Our rough estimate: 964 units at about 26 minutes each is around 420 hours, which is about 4.6 years at 15 minutes a day or 2.3 years at 30 minutes. Use the finish-date tab above for your own pace.
